This is the story of Moby’s first visit to a UK school.

It all started with a parcel that arrived at BrainPOP UK, for the attention of our resident robot. It contained a number of posters, fan mail, and intriguingly, a link to a video.

It seemed a year 5 class at Titchfield Primary had been set a homework challenge: pick a BrainPOP topic you’re interested in and write about it.

When we saw the video of what the kids put together – “Our BrainPOP Homework“ - we were blown away! It was incredibly creative work, made with joyful enthusiasm. Not something you’d usually associate with your typical homework assignment ;-)

Along with their homework we received quite a few letters and drawings, all addressed to Moby, all pleading with him to come and visit.

    Moby please come!

This got us thinking, why not? Moby had never visited a school before and who better to visit than the hard working kids at Titchfield?

So we squeezed into the Moby mobile and headed to the school. After a quick tour of the school we hid out in the staff room while everyone rolled into assembly.

They had no idea who was just about to walk in. Moby’s excitement circuits were in overdrive!

Miss Deane, our inside woman, peeked out of the assembly hall to give us a signal, and we marched right down the middle of Mr Bainbridge’s assembly.

We were pretty lucky as Mr Bainbridge didn’t seem to mind. In fact, he seemed really pleased we’d chosen to visit Titchfield and even let Moby join in with the Assembly at times:

Next on the agenda was a few classroom visits. Moby met Year R first and enjoyed answering their questions.

When we visited Mr Howard’s Year 2 “Diamond Mine” classroom the kids were keen to know how Moby deals with the pressure of being famous. He loves it of course – he’s such an attention seeker.

Mr Howard's Year 2s get badges

Moby got a real kick out of meeting Year 1 – they had a castle and princesses in their book corner and BrainPOP and Purple Mash in the laptop corner. After lots of hugs we met Joe out in the corridor who got Moby’s autograph – the first of many that day!

    Moby meets Joe

After break we met Year 4 and Moby made sure to hand out a BrainPOP badge to each pupil – a certain teacher was particularly chuffed to get the Moby football badge.

    Moby and Year 4

We took class photos aboard the H. M.S. Titchfield moored in the playground and Miss Deane’s digital leaders did a fantastic job herding the classes in and out.

    Moby and the Digital Leaders

One thing we were particularly impressed with at Titchfield was that BrainPOP is being used throughout all year groups. From Reception to Year 6, every teacher and child was familiar with the site. Moby was particularly touched to receive a piece of writing from Tyrone, a reluctant writer in Year 1.

    Tyrone hands over his writing

Our last port of call for the day was meeting the homework whizz kids in Year 5 (a.k.a. H.M.S. Astute) who had Moby signing autographs.

We presented Miss Deane with a certificate for Titchfield for being such an excellent BrainPOPping school.

    Miss Deane accepts her certificate

We spoke to Miss Deane about their BrainPOP homework and here’s what she had to say:

Before we knew it, it was time to go back to BrainPOP UK HQ, but not before the Year 5 girls showed us a cheer they’d choreographed especially for Moby. Thanks girls!

Thanks to all the staff and students at Titchfield Primary for making us feel so welcome. We don’t think we could have picked a better school for Moby’s first visit…He wouldn’t stop beeping about it all the way home.

Read what Year 5 had to say about our visit: Our very special day

And here’s a collection of all our photos from the day: Titchfield Primary visit

Moby also insisted we make a video of his “best bits” so here they are for your entertainment:

Our extensive sports fields, including an all weather pitch, are amongst the best in the county enabling us to offer 15 different sports to our pupils.

    Introduction:

Over a couple of months we carried out action research using BrainPOP UK as a learning tool within lessons and as an extension at home. We did this with five different classes from Key Stages 3-4.

    Objectives:

    • To help students understand new knowledge in Science at Key Stage 3 and 4.
    • To allow students to use the movies and quizzes for independent revision and to improve the completion of homework.

    Methodology:

There were several different methods used to enhance the learning of all students, some of which evolved as the research commenced:

    • Students watched the BrainPOP UK movies and then completed the POPquiz associated with the movie as part of the lesson when the teacher introduced a new topic or learning objective.
    • Students watched the BrainPOP UK movies and then completed the POPquiz associated with the movie as part of homework. Students were given the URL for specific movies and quizzes to allow them to use them independently as part of their review, reflection and revision for each module.
    • Students watched the BrainPOP UK movies and then completed the POPquiz associated with the movie. Students then requested to extend these activities by demonstrating the knowledge they had learnt through the BrainPOP UK resources to develop their own online quizzes through web 2.0 tools such as Quizlet , Proprofs and Photopeach .
    • Students watched the BrainPOP UK movies and then completed the POPquiz associated with the movie. Students then requested to extend these activities by demonstrating their knowledge they had learnt through the BrainPOP UK resources by students creating their own online story boards of potential future BrainPOP UK movies that have not been created yet by BrainPOP UK.

    Outcomes:

    • Students have really been impressed and already love watching the movies.
    • Many have said that they make concepts really easy to understand often easier than the teachers can.
    • They have also really enjoyed completing some of the online quizzes to test their knowledge from watching the movies.
    • The older students at Key Stage 4 really valued the movies which did surprise me. They found them extremely easy to understand and helped them on certain topics that they found difficult within Science.
    • Many students were involved in using the resources and using them independently at home and outside of lessons in school.
    • Some students suggested to teachers in their other subjects to use a particular movie during a lesson (this was reported several times).
    • Many students often watched other movies and completed the quizzes in other subjects at home.
    • It allowed students to become more independent and creative through creating their own quizzes and designing and planning out potential future BrainPOP UK movies.

    Feedback from students:

“I loved watching the Tim & Moby movies they were entertaining but also helped you understand the Science behind it.”
    Year 8 Student

“I have used the BrainPOP UK movies and quizzes lots at home, I have used in many of my other subjects too when I have got stuck and didn’t understand something. It helped me to move on with my learning.”
    Year 9 Student

“I found the BrainPOP UK movies really easy to understand some of the more difficult Science concepts at GCSE. The way the movies explained it made sense and helped me understand the parts I didn’t understand in lesson.”
    Year 10 Student

    Multimedia:

So you’ve started your 30 day free trial and you’re ready to dive into BrainPOP UK with your pupils.

But where to start? Click a couple of movies at random? Take a quiz yourself?

It’s difficult to judge a product without some stimulus on how to get the most from it. So here are our top tips  – they’re not defintive and they’re quite simple so we’d love to hear more of your experiences in the comments. If you send us a top tip we’ll send you a goodie!

    1) Take the robot by the horns – try using BrainPOP UK resources to challenge your class

Don’t start with a concept you or your pupils find easy, when evaluating. Start with a movie that you struggle to get engagement with or find it tricky to get the concept across in a simple way.

It might be the Atomic model, Plate Techtonics, Converting fractions to decimals, Punctuation, or even the Stock Market.

Play it to your class and invite feedback on its impact. Use the pause button regularly to stop and provoke discussion or invite questions. See if Tim and Moby acted well as middle men between the concept and your pupils.

    2) Timing is everything – mix up when you take the POPquiz

    1. Ask your students to take the Graded version of the quiz (where results are emailed to a nominated email address) individually before watching the movie. At this point they will not know what score out of ten they got.
    2. Then watch the movie (and do your whole teaching thing, of course).
    3. Then take the same quiz again.
    4. This time you might want to let them see their score or make them email you again. You should be able to see, side by side, whether the movie that accompanies the quiz and the teaching you did around it, has had any immediate impact on their understanding.
    5. Then…do the exact same quiz again a week later!

    3) Take advantage of Deep Beep – we’re mapped against English and Scottish curricula

Get your lesson plans/Schemes of Work out. Use Deep Beep, our new curriculum movie matching tool, to drill down via the curriculum you are using to the objective you want to cover. There should be a movie there waiting to be used to complement that objective. Bookmark that URL for later or copy and paste it into a document.

    4) ‘Tis better to give than receive – help your department or budget holder see what BrainPOP UK can do

Give your login to a colleague. Seriously. Give it to all your colleagues that you think might be interested, in all departments. BrainPOP UK is a cross curricular resource that is often used at all ages. It can be surprisingly handy with 5 year olds as with 18 year olds. We’ve had success stories reported from all sorts of surprising places:

    mrlockyer_twitter

    5) Homework – BrainPOP UK is all online, which means you can link home and classroom effectively

Give your students a list of movies and quizzes you want them to watch at home. There’s no worries about giving your students your login details – they will expire anyway and you can always change them if you decide to subscribe. Ask them to choose the email option when taking the quizzes. That way you (should) have a lovely batch of quiz results to browse through for the next time you meet.

    6) The kitchen sink – see how BrainPOP UK delivers value for money

Look at our All Movies page. We admit it’s not the most glamorous page but a glance (or scroll) will show you sheer number of movies in BrainPOP UK. And they ALL come with your subscription. Now THAT’S value.

    7) Tim, Moby & YOU – encourage speaking and listening skills

Ask your pupils, in groups or by themselves, to introduce a movie and, if you are confident in them, let them pause the movie to prompt discussion and run the quiz too on the interactive whiteboard. You can also use the rewind and fast forward buttons to skip chapters within the movie.

8 ) See how easy it is to integrate BrainPOP UK movies locally – see how BrainPOP UK movies can be delivered outside the classroom

We bet there’s a school event happening at some point during your trial that a BrainPOP UK movie could be just right for, such as an e-safety week, or an anti bullying campaign or even an historical event such as Charles Dickens’ birthday (February 7, 1812, by the way). Link a BrainPOP UK movie on your VLE front page – ask us for a special URL that will take you straight to it without your VLE users having to login to BrainPOP UK.

*shhh, secret tip* when we launch our POPboxes (embeddable movies) you will be able to play particular movies right there in the page.

    9) Two BrainPOP’s are better than one – use collaboration to engage with BrainPOP UK

Split the class into pairs and ask them, with headphones, to watch a movie and then collaboratively discuss it and then share their insights to the class afterwards.

    10) Why BrainPOP UK?

This isn’t a tip but some of the best advice we can give you is to remind you that BrainPOP UK designed to fulfil a specific purpose: to engage children enough that they understand concepts.

    • We ARE an amazing answer to how to engage kids with new or hard to teach topics.
    • We CAN be used alongside your existing resources and are very easily integrated into your existing plans (and schemes!).
    • We SHOULD BE a stimulus for learning – not a series of discreet learning objects – for tackling tiny components of knowledge. Life is not like that. Why should learning resources be?

Any more tips on getting the best from BrainPOP UK?

PS: Thanks to Mr Stucke at http://www.mrstucke.com , who’s currently going through an extended BrainPOP UK evaluation with his school, for the inspiration to write this post.
